A dental crown is a prosthesis that sits on top of a tooth like a tooth cap. It is made in a dental laboratory with strong materials to protect the tooth underneath. This tooth crown mimics the characteristics of your original tooth in terms of shape, size and color and restores the broken down tooth with no hope, back into proper function.
When a crown is planned, the concerned tooth is reduced from all sides by 1.5 to 2 mm and a margin is prepared on which the crown sits like a dental cap. This margin is then recorded by the dentist in a soft impression material that hardens around the tooth in a few minutes creating a perfect copy of your tooth. This is then sent to a dental lab where a technician then makes a crown in the shape, size and color of your original tooth along with a perfect edge which then sits on your tooth margin. The crown is checked for any points and when the patient is satisfied, the crown is fitted into the mouth with permanent cement. This procedure takes about 4-5 days to finish. Hence while the dental crown is being fabricated in the lab, a temporary crown is given in the interim period. A temporary crown is not strong enough to take your chewing forces so the patient is asked to not use that side for chewing food. Stainless steel crowns are the most popular but due to their unsightly look, they are slowly being hazed out of the dental scene in Mumbai. But stainless steel crowns are easier on the pocket compared to their tooth-colored counterparts so it is an option for you which fits comfortably in your budget.
