When do you need Gum Surgery?

Gingivitis is an infection of the gums due to the deposition of plaque and tartar along the gum line.

  • The gums during gingivitis become red and swollen with rounded edges due to inflammation and tend to bleed easily.
  • The gum collar around your tooth becomes loose and pus develops in the gap between the gums and teeth.

If gingivitis is left untreated for 3-4 weeks after gingivitis develops, this infection progress to periodontitis which is a much more serious condition and difficult to cure.

FAQ

There are certain factors that increase your risk of causing rapid developing  gum disease which needs surgical intervention:

  1. POOR ORAL HYGIENE: Good oral hygiene habits are simple and do not take any effort to follow. Brushing your teeth twice a day, flossing your teeth once a day and going to the dentist every 6 months for scaling and a follow-up. Neglecting these habits lead to an increase in bacterial load which causes gum swelling and gum inflammation along with loss of teeth which can never go back to the way they were in spite of taking extreme measures to contain the infection.
  2. SMOKING OR CHEWING TOBACCO: Both of these habits have a high propensity to cause oral cancers. These habits exacerbate the gum infection and bone infection in your mouth and cause the failure of the surgeries done to reverse the damaging effects.
  3. DIABETES: Along with the other bad effects of this disease, it affects your mouth too. Your gingivitis can quickly change to severe periodontitis, within a week if not treated in time. In fact, severe periodontitis which is highly resistant to treatment measures can be the first sign of diabetes. A dentist can mostly be the first person to ask you to get your blood sugar test done.
  4. MEDICINES: Certain medications can exacerbate gum disease such as oral contraceptives, steroids, anticonvulsants chemotherapy drugs. These are life-saving drugs that you cannot stop but you can start doing regular follow-ups with your dentist.
  5. AGE: Age-related gum recession is something you can’t help but you can get regular scaling and polishing done to stay on top of your oral health.
  6. HORMONAL CHANGES: Women undergoing pregnancy or menopause can be at a higher risk of developing gingivitis leading to periodontitis. Gums are very sensitive to hormonal changes and you can do regular follow-ups with your dentist to counteract any changes that might lead to you developing oral infections.
